Why pay attention to the SOTU?

Most people pay a little attention to the State of the Union Address. They can be boring and filled with lots of rhetoric and horn tooting. However, the SOTU given on 1/20/15 is worthy of attention because it lays out the battle lines for American politics for the next few years leading up to the 2016 presidential election.

Of particular interest should be the GOP/Tea Party response. Their response, and the public reaction, will determine if we continue down the path of oligarchy (rule by the few and wealthy), or whether we reclaim the republic where we are a government for the people. Do we continue to help the wealthy or do we step up for the workers? Do we help the elderly or shunt them off to poverty in oblivion? Do we care about families or only those with the 'right' last names? Do we let loose the Cracken  of an unfettered Wall Street or rein in the abuses of unregulated money changers? Do we protect the environment and try to have a better world for our children/grandchildren or seek to make money with disregard for the consequence? Do we let consumers make intelligent/informed choices concerning the food they eat and the products they buy, or just ignore dangers of manipulated and tainted products? Are we all partners in the economy, politics, and culture, or, as in Animal Farm, are some more equal than others?

These are just some of the pressing questions and lines that have been drawn by the SOTU. We really need to pay attention or quick bitchin'. We create our reality, please do so wisely.

Who Benefits From the Chaos in Washington?

"Who benefits" has become my favorite question. Who benefits from the government shutdown? Who would benefit from not raising the debt ceiling? Who benefits from not compromising? Who benefits from the farce we call Congress?

We know that the right/Tea Party has gambled that they could blame the funding crisis on Obama. We also know that more moderate Republicans went for the ride until they began to see the ship sink and public opinion turn against them. We know that the Democrats and the President have caved all to often and that they felt that if they didn't stand up, for once, that they would hurt their 2014 chances. But, is there a group that transcends this pettiness and gains no matter what happens?

While some vocal business interests have complained about this Beltway fiasco, one can't help but wonder why the monied interests are largely publicly silent. Yes, their henchmen, Tea Party, are quite vocal, but why would they support what could become economic chaos? Who benefits from such chaos? Who benefited from the 2008 Recession and is still making record profits? Who always comes out ahead when their are perceived economic problems? What is their real agenda? Who actually profits from negative conditions such as war, famine, disease, and economic collapse?

The decisions in Washington are not made by the politicians. Strings are being pulled and the puppeteer laughs all the way to the ....

THE AMERICAN WINTER: WHO WILL RAISE THE DEBT LIMIT ON THE MORAL DEFICIT?

When I speak of morals, I am not talking about those of any particular religion. Nor am I talking about some mythical objective morality expounded by Sam Harris. Both of those approaches either have, or will, take us down a path that only leads to divisiveness at best, and outright hatred at worst. Perhaps I am talking about spiritual morality or just plain common sense. This is not to say that there are not basic positive moral codes in the various religions. In fact, their fundamental principles are essentially the same. However, the mere invocation of a Christian, Muslim moral precept raises the hackles of the non-Christian or Muslim.

Most have followed our dysfunctional Congress as they debated raising the debt ceiling. Most were also appalled at the way political ideology almost, and still may, brought the nation to economic ruin. Much of the debate, particularly from the far right, the Tea Party, centered on the notion that government has gotten too big and that liberties were being destroyed by Big Brother. What mattered little was any concern for the elderly, the poor, the unemployed and the needs of the people and the environment. Concern seemed greatest for Wall Street, the banks and the rich. Unfortunately for us all, the concerns over Big Brother have been misplaced. It is not the government that should be watched. Rather, it is the power of the rich.

America has always had a common sense tradition of helping each other. This is the very notion of ‘commonwealth.’ It wasn’t until the Industrial Revolution that the ‘people’ felt the need to increase the role of government in order to protect that commonwealth. Abuses by growing corporations against men, women and children led to demands by the people that they be protected against the onslaught of corporate greed. When it was discovered that these same ‘robber barons’ were also destroying the environment, once again, the people demanded redress. The abuses of Wall Street resulted in the creation of a host of social safety programs that would help guarantee that people could live their lives with decency. As a society, we agreed that no one should be hungry, homeless, or without some form of medical help and income in their later years. The people took a moral stance as to how we wanted to live and die and agreed to let our government do what was necessary to accommodate these desires. Was or are the programs designed to meet these objectives perfect. Of course not.

The growth of government corresponded with the abuses of corporations. Blatant and wanton environmental destruction required environmental laws. The use of dangerous and disease producing chemicals in products required safety laws. Dangerous toys and false product claims demanded further regulation. Shoddy construction required building standards. A society on the go resulted in even more safety laws. The point is, where we are today is the result of corporate abuse. It makes common sense to want safe products, clean water and air, a life where you don’t lose all to pay for medical needs, and some form of protection from companies that have no issue with moving jobs to foreign lands so they can make larger profits. Government did not grow because of some dictator that assumed power and then imposed its will upon the people. It grew because of the will of the people.

I would venture to say that on average, people don’t generally feel that government controls their daily lives. Unless you are trying to do something that may affect your neighbors, most people can say, do, and think what they will. Yes, we have certainly allowed protections to go overboard, but the fundamental needs and wishes of the people for a safe, secure, free and open society have not changed. Further, there is still the option of throwing rascals out of office.

However, let’s look at Wall Street. Given the opportunity, and there are plenty of them, they are openly impinging upon your rights and freedoms. Whenever possible, they have and will take away your right to a safe environment. They pollute the air, the water and the soil. From oil spills to carcinogenic materials, they do all that they can to make profit over preserving the environment. They also lie about what they are doing and are rarely held accountable for their actions. Whenever possible, they take as many short cuts as they can with regard to food safety. They fight against the right of workers to bargain for good wages and benefits and if it gets too dicey, they simply move jobs overseas, thus curtailing you right to live and work where you choose. In the name of a free economy, they try to take away your right to social security and want you to mortgage your life away for private insurance. They create new diseases and then the pill to fix it, until it’s deemed dangerous and taken off the market. They destroy small businesses but out competing and pricing. They suck you into a mortgage you can’t afford and then take your home away to sell to the next sucker. They charge usurious rates for credit and will toss you out on the street at the first hint of any payment problem. They purposely withhold inventions and technologies so that they can continue to exhaust a resource and pull every penny out each investment, if even if that investment is destructive. In a 8/4/11 article in the Huffington Post regarding patents, it was noted that:

“Today, the patent bill looks like a scorecard tallying points for powerful corporations: a win for pharmaceutical companies whose monopolies are driving up Medicare costs; a win for Wall Street's battle against check-processing patents; a loss for tech giants who had hoped to curb costly lawsuits.

Left out of the tally is the public, even as the economic landscape for American families grows darker. Historian Richard Hofstadter famously observed that Congress during the Gilded Age busied itself with dividing the nation's spoils among the rich and powerful. But as the current patent struggle suggests, the spoilsmen are back and Washington is once again an arbiter of who lands the lucre.”

What is ironic is that the very right wing groups who decry the growth of big government are trying to through the public back into the hands of big corporations whose sole motive is to make money. These very same hands are the reason for the growth in government in the first place as it was necessary to fight the growing stranglehold Wall Street did and does have on every American citizen. The moral deficit in this country far surpasses the extent of the budget deficit. We are in the American Winter, one can only hope that we see spring once again.

GENOCIDE BY OMISSION

Okay, maybe genocide is too strong of a word to use but you have to wonder. In Maine, LaPage has managed, in a day or two, to change the Health Care law. In essence, 28,000 mostly elderly and handicapped will no longer be eligible for Medicaid. Nationally, the Tea Party and other more conservative Republicans are on a vendetta against the elderly and the poor, promising to not approve deficit increases unless Medicare and medicaid are altered and funding reduced.

The bottom line, in my opinion, is that these people are trying to throw away, discard the elderly and lower income Americans. Many of these same people took America out from WW II to create a nation with the highest standard of living on the planet. They worked their asses off for America. Clearly, when these people bought insurance and paid their SS and health care, insurance companies and the government knew that one day these folks would retire and be in need of health care. They all took the money, but now they don't want to pay. We have placed Profit over caring, concern for the dollar over the integrity of human life.

This in not my America. We do not 'omit' whole segments of society so that insurance companies, oil companies and the rich can make more profit while the rest of the country languishes as they choose between food or medicine. We are engaged in the wrong debate. We should be talking about how we can ensure that all Americans live a life with dignity, free of concern over food, shelter and health. Why should only the politicians and the rich live the carefree life at the expense of those who have worked the factories, hauled the trash, built the roads, taught our kids and fought our wars. If this nation claims to be christian, you have fooled me. You want to steal the widows purses and then talk about free enterprise. Give me a break. Decisions we have made are already coming back to bite us in the but. If we decide to lose our humanity, I wonder what consequence that will bring!

MARIA PACHA: ENOUGH!

 GUEST POST BY MARIA PACHA.

Enough already!

Somewhere along the line you’ve lost touch with the reality most of us live with and you’ve decided that what is good for you, must benefit us. It doesn’t.

Since you obviously don’t know where I’m coming from or what I’d like ...to see, let me tell you.

1. No one else in the middle-class world (that is rapidly ceasing to exist) gets to vote themselves a pay raise. Neither should you. In my humble opinion, you haven’t done anything to deserve one for a very long time.

2. You also don’t deserve a special retirement plan. Get on Social Security like the rest of us and good luck surviving on it in the fashion you’ve grown accustomed to.

3. All American citizens should have health care for medical necessities based on their incomes. If this means a national health insurance, so be it. But, health insurance should not be a “for profit” business, particularly when insurance companies often deny or limit care based on the determination of individuals unqualified to do so, or because of their pre-determined profit margins. Don’t tell me it doesn’t happen. I know it does. So do most of your constituents.

4. About the budget…I suggest you have it reviewed by a single mother struggling to make ends meet on minimum wage. Anyone of them can show you how to cut out what’s unnecessary, including, but not limited to: committees that don’t benefit anyone but the committee members serving on them, pay raises you’ve voted for yourselves (again), grants for research that benefits only the people doing the research. The list goes on, but those are a few examples.
In the real world, you see, people get paid for providing a task or service that others need, not because of who they know.
For those of my friends who aren’t aware of the list of government agencies that are actually out there, that your tax dollars support, take a look at the following: http://www.usa.gov/Agencies/Federal/All_Agencies/index.shtml
In my opinion, many of these agencies are redundant.

5. If you have to cut programs (and you do), DON’T make one of them education for our children. That’s about the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard of, and I’ve heard some doozies from you over the years.

6. I have no clue why you lease our off-shore oil rights to private companies that in turn charge American citizens an arm and a leg for the processed oil we need for heating, electricity and vehicle fuel. Actually, I have a clue, but I hate to believe that it somehow benefits the politicians who approve such inanity at a cost to American citizens. And, I have no idea of why when those foreign companies are responsible for damage to the lives and property of our citizens the government doesn’t suspend those leases until the damages are paid. By the way, where does the money from those leases go?

7. I think bailing out lending companies was a huge mistake. I would rather have seen you provide that money to the home owners who had lost their jobs and needed money to pay the mortgages for a few months until they found new ones. Instead, many of those tax payers lost their homes, and the lending companies have been left holding property they can’t sell in a struggling market. Not to mention the fact that their executives STILL received year-end bonuses.

That’s only the beginning of my list of suggestions and complaints, but those are among my most serious concerns. They’ve been building for quite some time.

I’m upset about the way things are going. Everyone I know is upset about the way our country is headed. Most people suffer in silence, apparently believing our politicians really care about us. I don’t anymore. I think you are mistaking our silence for approval. It’s not!

I don’t want to have to see protests or any form of violence as a result of the frustration of the masses, but I’m afraid that if too many people get overwhelmed that’s exactly what will happen in the United States.

I urge all of my friends to contact Senators and Congressmen/women and share their opinions directly with you, and, not just the ones from their own states and districts, but to all of you so that you will take us seriously.

Sincerely
Marie Pacha

To my friends:
The websites below provide email addresses for most, if not all, Senators and Congressmen. We can sit back and continue to voice our concerns to one another or we can present them to the individuals who are responsible and can do something about them.

If you have complaints other than those I have mentioned, add them to your list and SEND them to as many of these politicians as you can. There are also email addresses readily available for the President and Vice-President.

WHEN 62% VOTE AGAINST YOU

In Maine, Tea Party candidate Paul LePage won the governorship with only 38% of the vote. That means that 62% of the state voted against him. The problem is that there were 5 candidates. The next closest was an independent with 37% of the vote.  Clearly, the Republican winner has no mandate from Maine voters. Clearly, there is a need for reform to enable a run off election if no one gets a majority.

This is the general problem with the 2010 mid-term election. Assumptions are being made that the state and the country voted for the Republican agenda. I do not believe this happened. I do not believe that people voted to reduce deficits-most do not really care about defecits. They did not vote to reduce or privatize social security. They did not vote to eliminate health care-most of the provisions have not even gone into effect. They did not vote to eliminate or reduce unemployment benefits. They did not vote to fire hundreds of thousands of government workers and teachers. They did not vote to eliminate climate change regulations that will save the planet. They did not vote to make it easier for companies to to pollute; for banks to take our homes; for credit card companies to drive us deeper into debt.

There certainly needs to be change. People do want to end wasteful spending, eliminate fraud, and reduce intrusion in their lives. But clearly, there is no mandate to turn the country over to big corporations and to eliminate programs so desperately to help people in these trying times-times which were generated by excessive greed.

WHY DEMOCRATS REALLY LOST 2010

Pundits are trying to claim that the massive Democrat defeat in the mid-terms was a vote against the policies of president Obama. Not so!

The defeat was a rebuke of the Democratic Party's failure to do what they were elected to do in 2008. Instead of helping small businesses and the average person, they sided with big business and gave them $billions. Then, when homes were being taken, they did basically nothing to help the homeowner. Did they do anything to create more jobs? Not really. Did they free us from the drain that health care causes and create a truly worry free health care system? No. Did they really stand up to big business and the banks? No, what they passed has so many loopholes they were hardly worth passing. Did they stand up and say no to tax breaks for the rich? No. Did they pass envirnmental protection legislation dealing with climate change? No. Did they refuse to take campaign contributions from big corporations in 2010? Mostly not.

If the Democrats stuck to their principles and were true to their beliefs, they just might have had a great victory. When it became clear that the Republicans did not want to compromise and work with them, they should have had the courage to vote for what they claimed they stood for. In truth, people did vote vote against the Obama policies, rather, they voted against ineffective politicians who were afraid to do what we thought they were elected to do. In most cases, it wasn't pro Tea Party or pro Republican votes, it was anti-ineffectivness votes.

The Democratic Party let us all done and they paid the price for their lack of courage to make the changes they promised. A nation does not shift from supporting Obama and then two years later flip to Tea Party ideas. We are not that politically fickle. We are a people of 'imediate gratification.' We want it now. If you say that you will do something and you do not deliver, we will not support you. So dear Republicans, do not put too much into your victory and do not think that it clears the way for 2012. Although it might have something to do with 2012, but that is another story!

NO TEA FOR EDUCATION!

I received a communication from the education union for the state and thought that the message was actually appropriate to probably most, if not all, Tea Party candidates across the nation.

PLEASE VOTE-DON'T LET A MINORITY DETERMINE OUR FUTURE. DON'T LET OUR ELECTIONS BOUGHT.

If elected,( FILL IN THE NAME OF YOUR TEA PARTY CANDIDATE)  may attempt to silence the ( YOUR LOCAL EDUCATIONAL UNIONS) but then, who will defend public education?
It will not be the Wall Street corporations, who put profit ahead of student learning in charter schools. Not the anti-government Libertarians, who want to let "gifted" and wealthy students succeed while the others fall by the wayside. Not the politicians who waffle in the breeze and adopt every new, generally worthless reform.
Who would advocate for students? Not the Tea Party partisans, who would turn the clock back to 1960 and save money by increasing class sizes, ignoring special needs children, and using out-of-date text books.
Who will be there to defend educators? Who would step up when a bus driver is fired because he complained about bus safety? Who would defend an excellent teacher who is fired to give a school board member's niece a job?
Who will fight the legal battles for a teacher who is fired because of her race, religion, or ethnicity? Who will protect teacher retirement programs and health insurance plans from the attacks that are sure to come in the 125th Maine Legislature?(PUT IN YOUR OWN STATE DATA)
James Madison's gift to this nation was the concept of checks and balances in our government. It is the foundation of our democracy and it works equally well in education

TEA PARTY "DUH" ON CLIMATE

Our Coming Mega-Drought

| Fri Oct. 22, 2010 3:00 AM PDT
Here are a few recent data points for you: (1) The New York Times reports that "skepticism and outright denial of global warming are among the articles of faith of the Tea Party movement." (2) In the National Journal, Ron Brownstein notes that "The GOP is stampeding toward an absolutist rejection of climate science that appears unmatched among major political parties around the globe, even conservative ones....Of the 20 serious GOP Senate challengers who have taken a position, 19 have declared that the science of climate change is inconclusive or flat-out incorrect." (3) It's not just Senate candidates. ThinkProgress notes that an analysis by Wonk Room "finds that 22 of the 37 Republican candidates for governor this November are deniers of the scientific consensus on global warming pollution." (4) The Wall Street Journal reports that "extreme drought" has taken hold in parts of nine states stretching from the Southeast to the lower Midwest.

NO TEA FOR ME.

Neither Maine nor the nation needs the Paul LePage’s of the world. Time to dump the Tea Party into the harbor. Maine has a long tradition of independence but it also cares for its people. LePage, and it seems all Tea Party minded candidates, would return us to an era of survival of the fittest. Under the guise of less spending and reduced regulations, their ideas do nothing but give big business free reign to continue to rape and plunder the middle class.

Maine’s unemployment is around 50, 000. LePage wants to layoff 6-7,000 teachers. That’s a real economic benefit. Just what we need, more people searching for scarce jobs, more lost homes and higher welfare needs.  But wait, they also want to cut welfare and put the ‘lazy bums’ back to work. Where? Yes, there are abusers of the welfare system and programs to get rid of ‘welfare lifers’ who could otherwise work makes sense. But, there are many with legitimate needs and in Maine, we used to care for those who need help. But I suppose it is easy to pick on the poor! What is totally illogical is that LePage wants to cut support for the University system, Community Colleges, and K-12. Stop that train. How will reductions in the very systems that are needed for an intelligent work force going to attract jobs? LePage further wants to abolish the State Department of Education thereby cutting off access to millions of dollars. Hang that phone up, Mr. LePage. Those are my tax dollars coming back to Maine. Why would I want them going to who knows where?

While mouthing support for alternative and renewable energy, LePage and the Tea Party are big supporters of more offshore oil drilling and nuclear power. Just what the Gulf of Maine needs, oil rigs run by the likes of BP and nuclear power that produces radioactive waste good for at least several hundred thousand years. Hell, the U.S can’t safely dispose of the waste it has now, what sense is it to add to the problem?

Everyone likes to hear phrases like reduce government spending, give tax cuts, fight the bureaucrats, and get government off our backs. If history is any indicator, the tax cuts benefit the wealthiest; reduced regulation means let’s not worry about oil spills; and, getting government off our backs means let the large corporations do what they want. And to date, what they want is to send their jobs overseas and pay slave wages.

What will really attract jobs to Maine? A clean environment, an educated work force, quality services, modern infrastructure and fewer damn potholes will help bring jobs to Maine. These things cost money and to think you will have them by just cutting taxes, dumping on government workers, and firing teachers is ludicrous! These same people don’t want to extend unemployment benefits, deny retirees benefit increases, take free choice away from women and slam the poor and unemployed because they got shafted by big business. This is not what Maine is about and it is not what America is about. Do we need changes and improvements and politicians who do not placate themselves to the rich and powerful? Of course! But we don’t need politicians who claim to be for the middle class but whose policies would continue to destroy the very people they hope will vote for them. No ‘tea’ for me, no tea for Maine and no tea for the nation. We are a country of coffee drinkers and hopefully the electorate is bright enough to understand that.
