Where are all of the holiday commercials?

Image result for christmas ads 2015

In recent years there has been a chorus of complaints, mine included, about Christmas commercials starting even before Halloween. The buy now, shop early was really annoying. This year, holiday commercials are almost non-existent, relatively speaking. The most I've seen so far are from car dealers, the little else. Why? Have companies seen the light? Have they decided to not annoy people?

Even more interesting is the total lack or new products--new fads to attract the weak minded, weak willed, the keeping up with the Jones', and the gullible. No really new gadgets-just old models made bigger or slightly modified. Star Wars-boring, been there, done that.

Yeah, there are Black Friday and pre-Black Friday and post Black Friday emails advertising sales, but it's all just same old stuff. What is going on? Are companies just trying to save on expenses? Are they concerned that wanton consumerism is a thing of the past? Do they know something about the economy that we don't? For an economy that has rebounded this lack advertising is disconcerting. The lack of anything new is bothersome.

On the one hand I was happy not to be inundated with ads in October. But here we are, the week of Thanksgiving, and I'm still not seeing what has become the normal bombardment of jingle bell ads.

When Wall Street doesn't act in their normal greedy way, it is worth taking notice; it is worth wondering why.

The Red Shift

Science minded folks are aware of the Red Shift in astronomy; proof that universe is expanding as objects moving away shift their color spectrum to the red. But the red shift I speak of concerns politics, not the stars. In this case, the red is the right, the GOP. And this tone of red is not very pretty.

From tax relief, the social net, to health care, people programs are being assailed. "Since taking control of the House in 2010, Republicans have crafted dozens of bills ostensibly devoted to "streamlining and simplifying" the federal government. They've pushed them through the lower chamber, promising to cut red tape and create jobs. But on Tuesday, they let the cat out of the bag. These bills, it turns out, are essentially efforts to undermine Wall Street reform and Obamacare while greenlighting pollution" (Huffington Post 3/19/15).

We see it everywhere: assaults on collective bargaining, tax breaks for the wealthy, attacks on renewable energy in favor of oil, cuts in welfare, health care, and even new waves of racism and bigotry. The goal is to undo rather than do, tear down rather than to build up, stonewall rather than moving forward. Basically, the system is a mess. There is no conservation, no support for helping those in need, no support for real job creation, no helping people get back on their feet, no protection for the environment, nothing for education, and nothing to help job producing small businesses. The focus is on the top. This is not being a conservative, it's being extreme right wing, oligarchic ... wrong.

Of course, we are not alone, this shift has happened elsewhere, most recently, Israel. In this case, the shift may put an end to any hope of peace and may result in war. Moving to the extreme of the political spectrum, in either direction, never turns out well.

Hold on to your hats, this will not be a fun ride. The shift to the red will not end in a field of poppies.

Why pay attention to the SOTU?

Most people pay a little attention to the State of the Union Address. They can be boring and filled with lots of rhetoric and horn tooting. However, the SOTU given on 1/20/15 is worthy of attention because it lays out the battle lines for American politics for the next few years leading up to the 2016 presidential election.

Of particular interest should be the GOP/Tea Party response. Their response, and the public reaction, will determine if we continue down the path of oligarchy (rule by the few and wealthy), or whether we reclaim the republic where we are a government for the people. Do we continue to help the wealthy or do we step up for the workers? Do we help the elderly or shunt them off to poverty in oblivion? Do we care about families or only those with the 'right' last names? Do we let loose the Cracken  of an unfettered Wall Street or rein in the abuses of unregulated money changers? Do we protect the environment and try to have a better world for our children/grandchildren or seek to make money with disregard for the consequence? Do we let consumers make intelligent/informed choices concerning the food they eat and the products they buy, or just ignore dangers of manipulated and tainted products? Are we all partners in the economy, politics, and culture, or, as in Animal Farm, are some more equal than others?

These are just some of the pressing questions and lines that have been drawn by the SOTU. We really need to pay attention or quick bitchin'. We create our reality, please do so wisely.

Disastrous not just for Democrats

Yup, democrats got whipped big time on November 4th. But they will not be the only ones to suffer. With the republicans running the show, look for new trade deals in Europe and the Asia. Sounds good? Well, have free trade deals ever increased jobs at home? No. Just as the American economy is thinking about turning around, more jobs will be sent to foreign shores. Further, most of the "free" trade deals on the table allow corporations to override local business rules and environmental regulations. Look for Wall Street to make more money and for workers to lose more jobs.

Higher wages for American workers? Yeah, right. We know where the GOP stands on raising the minimum wage.

Better jobs and higher wages for women? Umm, no.

Protection and proper response to changing climate? Not a chance. Regardless of the causes of climate change, reliance on fossil fuels , strip mining, record CO2 emissions, poisoning water supplies with fracking chemicals, massive oil spills, deforestation, arctic drilling, over fishing, acid oceans from pollution, etc., are definitely not a good thing for us or the environment. The GOP and its big money supporters have, recently, done nothing to solve these problems and are often the cause of them.

Banking reform and regulations that help Main Street and small business? Well, we know what's happening there: nothing but rules that benefit big corporations.

Peaceful approaches in foreign affairs? Isn't it the GOP that asks for more definitive military action in the Middle East?

This is not a very good time for the nation to shift to the political right. Yup, you can smoke dope in several new places but in the total scheme of things, will that really matter?

Yes, the election of 2014 was indeed disastrous.

A BANDAGE FOR A TUMOR?

A tumor has been festering in American society and the cure is not a bandage. There are those among us who want to sacrifice the populace on the alter of Wall Street. This disease wants to ensure that: banks aren't regulated; oil companies have unfettered access to anyplace; environmental concerns are trashed; profit is king.

This disease has no use for social programs. The elderly are a burden. The poor are a burden. The sick are a burden. The raped are a burden. Workers are merely tolerated as a tool to exploit.

Yes, Congress passed a temporary budget. But we know that this bandage will not cure the illness. Americans have to decide who and what we are as a nation. And, while all are entitled to their opinions and beliefs, the 'minority report' is not the dictum to the whole. The next election will determine if we want this nation to go into cardiac arrest, or, if we strengthen through exercise and due diligence.

Who Benefits From the Chaos in Washington?

"Who benefits" has become my favorite question. Who benefits from the government shutdown? Who would benefit from not raising the debt ceiling? Who benefits from not compromising? Who benefits from the farce we call Congress?

We know that the right/Tea Party has gambled that they could blame the funding crisis on Obama. We also know that more moderate Republicans went for the ride until they began to see the ship sink and public opinion turn against them. We know that the Democrats and the President have caved all to often and that they felt that if they didn't stand up, for once, that they would hurt their 2014 chances. But, is there a group that transcends this pettiness and gains no matter what happens?

While some vocal business interests have complained about this Beltway fiasco, one can't help but wonder why the monied interests are largely publicly silent. Yes, their henchmen, Tea Party, are quite vocal, but why would they support what could become economic chaos? Who benefits from such chaos? Who benefited from the 2008 Recession and is still making record profits? Who always comes out ahead when their are perceived economic problems? What is their real agenda? Who actually profits from negative conditions such as war, famine, disease, and economic collapse?

The decisions in Washington are not made by the politicians. Strings are being pulled and the puppeteer laughs all the way to the ....

MR. PRESIDENT ... WHY?

Obama's EU Trade Deal Would Include New Political Powers For Corporations » Zach Carter | April 03, 2013 at 07:29 AM WASHINGTON --
The Obama administration is pursuing a free trade agreement with the European Union that would grant corporations new political power to challenge an array of regulations both at home and abroad, according to an administration official involved in the negotiations. While the plan is still in its early stages, the effort alarms consumer and environmental advocates who worry it will lead to a rollback of important rules and put multinational companies on the same political plain as sovereign ...

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/03/eu-trade-deal_n_2994410.html

I'm all into conspiracies, have been for a long time. To me, many of the theories aren't theories at all-they're the truth. In political circles, there has been much talk about the Illuminati and the New World Order. There has been much myth and erroneous information. The focus should instead be on Bilderberg, Skull and Bones, Bohemian Grove and a few others-basically, the elite of Wall Street and powerful politicians.

In the 2012 election there appeared to be a clear choice between the elite and the 'man of the people.' However, actions are louder than words and it appears that the elite won anyway. Having been in politics and government, I know that those with power have never really been those we elect. The power behind the throne has always been the dollar and those who control it. The degree of control has varied to a greater or lesser degree, but it's always there, lurking, ready to seize opportunities. Well, at this point, it looks like we were fooled. No matter where you turn, it seems that President Obama has been swallowed by special interests, becoming a pawn for the wealthy. From oil leases, GMO's and now more power to the multinationals, the rhetoric has fallen into the monied abyss.

It is said, 'better the enemy you know.' Guess, at this point, so far, we've all been duped.

Don't let the bastards get you down!

I had a disheartening conversation with an acquaintance of mine a few days ago. Being well educated, she has followed the antics of the banks, the economic fiascoes, political idiocy in congress, the constant denial about climate change, Monsanto and the GMO conspiracy, and the general head in the sand affliction being experienced by so many.

She said, "I give up. I'm going to close my doors (I think she meant in her mind, not home) and just not listen anymore. There's nothing I can do anyway."

I told her that if she did that, then THEY win. They have beaten you into submission and that has been their plan all along. Like, "Your vote doesn't make a difference" as a tool to keep people from voting while they line up their faithful at the ballot boxes.

So, she may have just been having a bad day, but with all that is happening in the world, don't let the bastards get you down. THEIR hope is that as issues drag on and no actions are taken, people will forget about the problems and/or just give up in frustration, thereby, they keep control. This is not a time for indifference or complacency. I have heard others say that since nothing happened on 12/21/12, all of this Earth change must be a bunch of bunk. That is so far from the truth and so much is changing that if you are aware, it makes your head spin. But you see, THEY wanted people to believe that changes were going to be a ONE DAY event. And, since nothing happened, there are obviously no problems. That was their spin many have fallen prey to this lie.

Keep watching, stay alert, stay tuned, that big lady has not even begun to sing ... yet.

DAS PLAN!

I have been trying ti figure out why the rating agencies have been screwing over nations and, supposedly, banks. Just what is DAS PLAN? I think this is a major part of it. If you look at the news, Greece, Italy, Spain, and even cities and states in the U.S. are being forced to 'privatize everything from roads to prisons. So who benefits from all the downgrades? Who makes money? It all circles back to WALL STREET. Any thoughts?

MARKET APPEASEMENT FAILING EU ECONOMIES...

In several posts I  indicated that the whole concept of Market Appeasement (Wall Street) was a dangerous and even absurd economic policy. The numbers are coming in and the hypothesis was correct, 'letting the markets dictate public policy leads to economic disaster.' The only people who benefit from austerity imposed measures are Wall Street. They get: higher interest rates, more guarantees that their investments are safe, elimination of those nasty social safety nets, a poorly funded educational system keeping the masses ignorant, and control over governments and politicians. Who benefits? Them-no one else. So here's what's happening in Europe, do we really want this to happen here, too?

Eurozone Unemployment Hits 10.9 Percent, A Record High

LONDON Record high unemployment for the 17 countries that use the euro is set to increase the pressure on Europe's leaders to switch from a focus on austerity to a pro-growth strategy to stop the region from moving deeper into recession.

Death of a Fairy Tale

By PAUL KRUGMAN
Published: April 26, 2012
This was the month the confidence fairy died.
Fred R. Conrad/The New York Times
Paul Krugman ---For the past two years most policy makers in Europe and many politicians and pundits in America have been in thrall to a destructive economic doctrine. According to this doctrine, governments should respond to a severely depressed economy not the way the textbooks say they should — by spending more to offset falling private demand — but with fiscal austerity, slashing spending in an effort to balance their budgets. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/27/opinion/krugman-death-of-a-fairy-tale.html?_r=1

WHO BENEFITS FROM GLOBAL DISASTERS?

While cleaning out the horse stalls thin morning I began to ponder some of the more recent news about the planet. The surge in volcanic activity, the increase in earthquakes, arctic/glacial melting, sea rise and acidification, dead birds, fish and sea mammals, the rise in resistant bacteria, strange Earth noises, solar flares, etc, and I asked myself, "Why is no one paying attention? Why are there not more headlines about these things?"

And then it hit me, it's because there are certain interests in the world that are or will actually benefit from these disasters. These same interests control the vast majority of the world's wealth. And, these interests may actually be either covertly, or inadvertently by design, creating these events. Yeah, I know, conspiracy, nut case, whack job, blah, blah. But, let's talk oil for a second. Many scientists claim that we have passed peak oil production, i.e., what we demand exceeds what's left. Then you look at all of the big oil companies and nations scrambling to get rights to drill in the arctic as it melts as we speak. Clearly, billions of $$$ are at stake in this race to control one frozen oceans and lands. Who benefits?

Look at the effects of droughts and floods on food production. Well, does this not open the door to promote more genetically modified crops; the use of even more fertilizers, and even pesticides? Who benefits? How about an increase in disease from warming climates. So now we need more and newer drugs. Who benefits? Loss of land to sea rise means re-building and higher land values. Who benefits? Rising deaths in third world nations? Perhaps a way for nations to cull out of control population growth?

You have to ask why the world is doing so little in the face of insurmountable evidence that the planet is in rough shape? You have to ask why people aren't up in arms over the raping of the environment and the fact that is falling apart. Who benefits? Why would they care if millions die, there's plenty more. Why would they care if the polar caps melt and the planet gets hotter? It's not like they will suffer. Why, at every turn, do these vested money interests fight tooth and nail every attempt to stop the pollution, the madness, the insane destruction of our only home?

We have seen that vested interests like to bet. They bet on the housing collapse, weather you can re-finance your home, on national stability, on economic failure--perhaps they are betting on how far they can go to disrupt life on Earth, how many people will die, how high the temperature or sea levels will rise.... Or, is it possible that humanity is just too stupid/ignorant to give a damn? Do they believe that someone will just solve all the problems and that it will all just work out?

I can't help but wonder what the betting odds are on 12/21/12.

MARKET ACCOUNTABILITY: THE NEW EVIL

The Eu nations, with a few exceptions, God Save the Queen, have sacrificed sovereignty in order to achieve "Market Accountability." No more are we talking about accountability to people. Rather, the 'market' (Wall Street), is now the dictator of public policy. To give the 'market' veto authority over nation's budgets is the that this way comes. Why does no one see this and call it what it is? At least the Brits were not beguiled by the power of money-perhaps for the wrong reasons, but they had the courage to say NO.

Wherever you turn, governments are cowering to the 'market.' It is all about what is best for the investors, the people be damned. In Greece, according to the BBC, the plight of the people is so bad that they are killing their pets because they can't afford to keep them. For what, so some banker in NY can buy more bobbles and bangles? People's lives are being ruined, jobs lost, homes taken, pensions decimated, health care unfunded; all to ensure there is Market Accountability.

S&P TAKES POINT ON NEW WORLD ORDER

Coming off record profits, no consequences for starting the world economic recession, and the expansion of the global economy, Wall Street is now openly ready to create their New World Order. Ahh, good old conspiracy theory, but sometimes the conspiracy is not a theory. Recent events regarding the debt crisis in the EU has made this effort at creating such an 'order' quite blatant.

We are all too familiar with the tales of economic woe in Greece, Ireland, Italy and even the U.S. "Investors" are demanding drastic cuts in budgets, at the expense of the people, and tax increases in order to appease financial interests. In Italy, the increase borrowing costs, which is creating even more of an economic problem, will also generate massive cuts. Spain and Portugal are on the brink as are many southern European nations.

Enter S&P and their magic 'downgrade' wand. This wand has been used to put the U.S. notice, basically ruined the Greek economy, what there was left of it, and is now aimed at the EU. For those who follow the Huffington Post, this headline should be familiar:
 NOWHERE TO RUN

S&P To Warn Of Downgrades For All Of Eurozone

Here's the deal, the European Central Bank wants to be able to approve EU member budgets and austerity programs to ensure that 'investments' are safe.  If members do not agree, then their rating will be downgraded and their economies will go belly up. S&P has fired the warning shot across the bow. Basically, Wall Street is acting with impunity with no one willing to just say NO. Even the U.S. is unwilling to pass a small tax increase on the wealthy to cover extensions in breaks for the middle class and working poor.

With the stalling "Occupy" movements, there appears to be no left standing to prevent the Wall Street onslaught against economies, the environment, government oversight and the middle and lower classes. Even with the warning by billionaire George Soros that the global economic system is on the verge of collapse, Wall Street still knows that they will come out on top. Perhaps they see this as an opportunity to rid the world of the flotsam and jetsam they call the masses in order to make life easier for the elite. But, perhaps they underestimate those masses and the very environment they seem so willing to sacrifice in order to achieve their own nefarious ends.

LOSE, LOSE FOR THE EU

Either the European Central Bank will gain financial sovereignty over the 17 nation union, or EU nations will suffer financial chaos. In order to 'win the trust of investors,' nations are being asked, threatened actually, to turn over their budget approvals to a central financial authority that can tel each country what and how they can spend their money. So basically, the banks, Wall Street, investors will dictate public policy for the 17 nations. The claim is that failure to do so will result in financial ruin with 'investors' unwilling to euro-nation bonds.

Can this be any more blatant? From what has been said, EU members will have to slash budgets, meaning loss of public jobs, pensions, heath, education ... in order to appease bankers. Is this the New World Order? The new world oligarchy? Why, any reasoning person should ask, do we continue to allow "INVESTORS" dictate public policy?

What is truly uncertain is whether or not events like the "Occupy" movement will have any impact on such moves by the rich and powerful. Has the growth in Wall Street power, as witnessed by their blatant disregard for anything-people, nation, climate, environment-become so strong that nothing can stand in their way as they seize control of every aspect of life? This are coming to a head in almost every human endeavor. 2012 is shaping up to be an interesting year.

WALL STREETS NEW CLOTHES

Can anyone please explain how raising the interest rates to Italy will help anyone?

I think people need to understand that the Emperor, Wall Street, has new clothes. In both Italy and Greece they have made loans impossible to pay off by raising interest rates. But, they don't lose at all. Either the EU bails them out-Wall Street gets paid, or, the nation defaults and Wall Street gets the spoils. And, to get bailed out, the nations must meet all kinds of requirements-lay off workers, loosen regulations and be indebted to international corporations or risk chaos.

This is also done to consumers. Those who are having financial difficulty get their credit card interest rates doubled, and more. Does this make sense? Does it make sense to raise mortgage rates when a consumer is on the edge? Why would it make sense to raise rates on a nation? While Obama is trying to ease rates for consumers, Banks are doing everything they can to increase fees and keep rates high.

Clearly, Wall Street knows they are in a win-win situation. They will always get their money and they get to dictate public policy. Is this really so hard to see?

THE AMERICAN WINTER: WHO WILL RAISE THE DEBT LIMIT ON THE MORAL DEFICIT?

When I speak of morals, I am not talking about those of any particular religion. Nor am I talking about some mythical objective morality expounded by Sam Harris. Both of those approaches either have, or will, take us down a path that only leads to divisiveness at best, and outright hatred at worst. Perhaps I am talking about spiritual morality or just plain common sense. This is not to say that there are not basic positive moral codes in the various religions. In fact, their fundamental principles are essentially the same. However, the mere invocation of a Christian, Muslim moral precept raises the hackles of the non-Christian or Muslim.

Most have followed our dysfunctional Congress as they debated raising the debt ceiling. Most were also appalled at the way political ideology almost, and still may, brought the nation to economic ruin. Much of the debate, particularly from the far right, the Tea Party, centered on the notion that government has gotten too big and that liberties were being destroyed by Big Brother. What mattered little was any concern for the elderly, the poor, the unemployed and the needs of the people and the environment. Concern seemed greatest for Wall Street, the banks and the rich. Unfortunately for us all, the concerns over Big Brother have been misplaced. It is not the government that should be watched. Rather, it is the power of the rich.

America has always had a common sense tradition of helping each other. This is the very notion of ‘commonwealth.’ It wasn’t until the Industrial Revolution that the ‘people’ felt the need to increase the role of government in order to protect that commonwealth. Abuses by growing corporations against men, women and children led to demands by the people that they be protected against the onslaught of corporate greed. When it was discovered that these same ‘robber barons’ were also destroying the environment, once again, the people demanded redress. The abuses of Wall Street resulted in the creation of a host of social safety programs that would help guarantee that people could live their lives with decency. As a society, we agreed that no one should be hungry, homeless, or without some form of medical help and income in their later years. The people took a moral stance as to how we wanted to live and die and agreed to let our government do what was necessary to accommodate these desires. Was or are the programs designed to meet these objectives perfect. Of course not.

The growth of government corresponded with the abuses of corporations. Blatant and wanton environmental destruction required environmental laws. The use of dangerous and disease producing chemicals in products required safety laws. Dangerous toys and false product claims demanded further regulation. Shoddy construction required building standards. A society on the go resulted in even more safety laws. The point is, where we are today is the result of corporate abuse. It makes common sense to want safe products, clean water and air, a life where you don’t lose all to pay for medical needs, and some form of protection from companies that have no issue with moving jobs to foreign lands so they can make larger profits. Government did not grow because of some dictator that assumed power and then imposed its will upon the people. It grew because of the will of the people.

I would venture to say that on average, people don’t generally feel that government controls their daily lives. Unless you are trying to do something that may affect your neighbors, most people can say, do, and think what they will. Yes, we have certainly allowed protections to go overboard, but the fundamental needs and wishes of the people for a safe, secure, free and open society have not changed. Further, there is still the option of throwing rascals out of office.

However, let’s look at Wall Street. Given the opportunity, and there are plenty of them, they are openly impinging upon your rights and freedoms. Whenever possible, they have and will take away your right to a safe environment. They pollute the air, the water and the soil. From oil spills to carcinogenic materials, they do all that they can to make profit over preserving the environment. They also lie about what they are doing and are rarely held accountable for their actions. Whenever possible, they take as many short cuts as they can with regard to food safety. They fight against the right of workers to bargain for good wages and benefits and if it gets too dicey, they simply move jobs overseas, thus curtailing you right to live and work where you choose. In the name of a free economy, they try to take away your right to social security and want you to mortgage your life away for private insurance. They create new diseases and then the pill to fix it, until it’s deemed dangerous and taken off the market. They destroy small businesses but out competing and pricing. They suck you into a mortgage you can’t afford and then take your home away to sell to the next sucker. They charge usurious rates for credit and will toss you out on the street at the first hint of any payment problem. They purposely withhold inventions and technologies so that they can continue to exhaust a resource and pull every penny out each investment, if even if that investment is destructive. In a 8/4/11 article in the Huffington Post regarding patents, it was noted that:

“Today, the patent bill looks like a scorecard tallying points for powerful corporations: a win for pharmaceutical companies whose monopolies are driving up Medicare costs; a win for Wall Street's battle against check-processing patents; a loss for tech giants who had hoped to curb costly lawsuits.

Left out of the tally is the public, even as the economic landscape for American families grows darker. Historian Richard Hofstadter famously observed that Congress during the Gilded Age busied itself with dividing the nation's spoils among the rich and powerful. But as the current patent struggle suggests, the spoilsmen are back and Washington is once again an arbiter of who lands the lucre.”

What is ironic is that the very right wing groups who decry the growth of big government are trying to through the public back into the hands of big corporations whose sole motive is to make money. These very same hands are the reason for the growth in government in the first place as it was necessary to fight the growing stranglehold Wall Street did and does have on every American citizen. The moral deficit in this country far surpasses the extent of the budget deficit. We are in the American Winter, one can only hope that we see spring once again.

IS AMERICA LOSING IT'S SOUL?

I don't mean in a religious sense. But clearly, something is fading away. Call it soul, spirit, heart, ideals, self....We are adrift and no none seems capable of finding a course. Politics is in chaos. The economy is a joke. Education just isn't. Help thy neighbor is a dirty phrase. We are destroying the environment, caving in on stupid political and economic demands, and Wall Street rules.

The latest deficit plan by the Tea Party simply pushes ahead their social agenda as it will result in the elimination of help for anyone. Requiring a balanced federal budget is absurd when times of crisis arise and, as always, it will be the average person that gets screwed if money needs to be spent on something-like war. We are gutting financial and environmental regulation because it might hurt the rich. We are even going to allow the polar caps to melt because there is lots of oil there. Is this what America has been all about? Step on the small guy so the few can attain even greater wealth and power?

It makes no sense, people. The decisions we are permitting to be made will be our swan song. This is truly the last dance. The orchestra has left the hall and we are still on the floor spinning to memories. How have we reached this level where we are but simple prey of advertising propaganda, political idiocy and news manipulation? So many have warned us of this moment and so few have listened.

I do not believe in religious Armageddon. But I do believe that the likes of the Mayans, Nostradamus, The Tarot Code, the Hopi,DaVinci and others gave us clear signs of the times we are now in. The choices we are making, either consciously or by proxy, will not be pleasant. Keep in mind, what is happening right now, in politics, the economy, the climate, etc., is the fruition of seeds that WE have planted. I hope you are concerned over what the next crop will bring.

7 WAYS TO CHANGE PUBLIC POLICY DEBATE FOR 2012

In my previous blog I talked about how Wall Street is controlling public policy debate. So the question is, “What are the right questions to ask concerning the current state of American and world affairs?” Further, can we achieve greater independence on this Independence Day if we, the people control the discussions? Let’s change some of the fundamental questions and see how we get totally different answers.

  1. How do we find more oil? This is the wrong question. When asked in this way we get, “drill baby drill.” Or, ease up regulations, open the Tundra, claim the Arctic so that when it melts we have first rights, etc. But if we ask, “How do we eliminate fossil fuels and base our lives and economies on ‘truly’ renewable and clean energy?” the discussion is totally changed.
  2. How do we reduce the budget deficit? The simple answer, when asked this way, is to stop spending and pay back the debt. Unfortunately, unless you evaluate the effectiveness of programs, the result becomes a farce as the focus is on dollars and not effectiveness. But, if we ask, “What programs are worth keeping and what is the best way to improve the efficiencies, effectiveness and usefulness of those programs?” we now begin a discussion of substance and not dollars and sense.
  3. How do we privatize health care and get government out of the insurance business? Easy, make people buy health care or go without. Instead, let’s ask, “What are the most effective, efficient and reasonable ways that we can provide for the health care of all citizens?” and the answer is different.
  4. How do we eliminate illegal immigration? Not quite as easy but increase border patrol, deport all illegals and maybe even build a wall or two. Or, “How can we best integrate and reduce the negative impacts of illegal immigrants as well as control the rate of immigration?” Again, the nature of that debate is different from the first.
  5. How do we reduce the size of government and get those bastards off our backs? The answer, for some, is to slash and burn government payrolls and make government business friendly. Perhaps we should ask, “What do we really want from our governments in this complex world and how do we get there?” You see, as we enter this new age we must revisit fundamental issues and really see where we want to go.
  6. Aren’t our schools out of control and our kids getting dumber? Answer, fire the teachers and create charter schools. Okay, this is a major beef with me. Our public education system created the most powerful nation on earth. Yes, it had/has problems. But for some reason we decided to swamp the whole thing rather than fix the leaks. So the real question might be, “Why is our educational system in such turmoil and what can we do to correct it?” Changing times requires changing models, but clearly, all of the so called ‘innovations’ are not working. Time for a national discussion.
  7. Aren’t scientists wrong about this whole climate change thing? Therefore, do nothing and it will all sort out. Wrong answer. The real question is, “How do we best help reduce the effects of environmental abuse, help end the 6th great extinction, and prepare people for what is surely happening?”
I could keep going on but hopefully you get the point. The way the question is framed determines the debate and the answers. Too often of late we have allowed the very, very few and the well-to-do to ask the questions. Is it no wonder the world about us collapses while we are not even talking about the right issues? If, we, the people, start asking the politicians the right questions, maybe we can force them to get back on track and actually represent us for a change. Happy asking!

7 WAYS WALL STREET CONTROLS THE DEBATE

If you control the question, you control the debate. Think about all of the problems confronting the world: climate change, droughts, floods, food shortages and spiraling prices, refugees, the economy, environmental degradation and ad infinitum. Yet, what are we talking about? Deficits, taxes, who’s running for president, who’s the best dancer, singer and a variety of other topics that divert our attention for the crises at hand. Enter Wall Street, the symbol of power and money who are controlling the national and international debates on policy. Wall Street, and by definition, the right wing, have managed to control the questions. How do they do that? Here are a few examples.
  • Create a Straw Man – Wall Street has done a great job at diverting attention to credit ratings at the expense of other key issues. By scaring the nation with talk of reducing credit rating (done by members who are employed by multi-national corporations), they have managed to take the ‘heat’ off of global warming and climate change.
  • Focus on the Numbers, Not the real Issues – The questions they raise are over amounts and not the substance. The issue is not how much Medicare or SS costs, the real question is how do we best care for an aging population? By forcing upon billions in costs rather than the needs of the population, they have people crunching numbers rather than coming up with solutions.
  • Question the Premise – Science is wrong, there is no climate change! Big business has poured millions into trying to reduce the credibility of anyone that opposes their goals.
  • You’re Not Worthy – It is fairly easy to make people think that they are undeserving of a social safety net. If they had worked harder they could have been wealthy, also, rather than suck off the public dole, regardless of the fact that the people contributed payroll deductions for such programs.
  • Make Absurd Demands – Rather than argue about the issue, Wall Street has been expert about asking for outrageous demands about the economy, regulations, budgets and cuts that have kept the debate on the demands and not the substance of the issue. This tactic keeps debate on the lines, rather than what’s behind the lines.
  • Scare the People – Threats of an oil shortage, loss of jobs, bad credit rating, inability to make loans, stifling regulations being bad for business, higher taxes will be bad for business, etc., are subtle threats that keep the public at bay for fear that dramatic actions will even make things worse. Oddly enough, even with soaring profits, this gambit is still very effective.
  • Welcome to Our Show – Remember the Roman Coliseum that kept the masses happy and entertained? The goal is to divert attention from the real problems. A few clowns in a presidential race keep the media occupied. Ads that promise new drilling, fracking, coal, bio-fuels, all electric vehicles and more give people a false hope that solutions are just around the corner. All the while, people are told that any interference will slow these plans down and thus the suffering will persist. In the meantime and behind the scenes, millions are being spent to gut environmental regulations, to lobby for free access to drill anywhere and to eliminate barriers to greater profit.
Yes, there are groups that are trying to expose these tactics but they must compete with the billions of dollars that Wall Street spends to hide the truth and to divert attention. Given that the media loves a good show, they unfortunately fall prey to covering the glitz at the expense of the gore. Since Wall Street is framing all of the questions, they have managed to control the debates.

OIL PRICE BS!

We keep taking it on the chin and Big Business/WALL STREET is throwing the punches. In addition to Republicans asking for more tax breaks for the wealthy, we are all drowning under the weight of oil prices. But why? Is there a supply issue? No, not really. Has there been a huge increase in demand? No, not really. So why?

http://useconomy.about.com/od/commoditiesmarketfaq/p/high_gas_prices.htm

What Is the Biggest Factor in High Oil Prices?:

Like most of the things you buy, oil prices are affected by supply and demand. However, oil prices are also affected by oil price futures, which are traded on the commodities futures exchange. These prices fluctuate daily, depending on what investors think the price of oil will be in the future. When traders think oil will be high, they bid it up even higher. This soon causes high gas prices..Another reason for high oil prices is the declining dollar. Since oil is denominated in dollars, the 40% decline in the dollar in the last six years puts upward pressure on oil prices. (Source: BBC, Oil Price May Hit $200 a Barrel, May 7, 2008)
Sometimes commodities traders drive up the price of oil, even when supply increases and demand falls. The EIA cites an increased flow of investment money into commodities markets. In other words, money that used to be invested in real estate or the global stock markets is now being invested in oil futures. (Source: EIA Short-Term Energy Outlook)

So you see, what is messing with everyone's  paycheck are a bunch of people making billions by BETTING on the price of oil.
